BiographySildomar Monteiro has a PhD degree in engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and a MSc degree in computer science from the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica. His PhD thesis was on machine learning algorithms for feature extraction applied to the analysis of hyperspectral image data. In 2004, he held an internship at Toshiba's Corporate Research & Development Center working on mapping and navigation for mobile robots. In 2007, he was awarded a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) postdoctoral fellowship and worked as a visiting researcher at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He resigned from this prestigious fellowship to join the Australian Centre for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney where he became Research Fellow in 2008. His research interests include machine learning, and statistical signal and image processing, as well as their applications, particularly in robotics, remote sensing and biomedical engineering. He enjoys playing volleyball and practicing guitar as hobbies. He speaks English, Portuguese and Japanese. He is married and has two children. For more about his background see his academic CV. |
